A guide to the gold standard treatment for many skin cancers:

FAQs about Mohs Micrographic Surgery (MMS)

Since it was first developed by the late Dr. Frederick Mohs nearly 90 years ago, Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) has established itself as the “gold standard” technique for removing BCCs and SCCs, basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas, the most prevalent types of skin cancers. And we are pleased to have one of the most experienced and skilled providers of this precision technique here at Apex Dermatology in Westlake Village, California.

Dr. Nikki Tang is a highly qualified and skilled in Mohs surgery. Dr. Tang has achieved board certification as a Mohs micrographic surgeon. Her expertise in this specialized field reflects hercomprehensive training and dedication to excellence in dermatological care.

Why does this matter?

Mohs micrographic surgery is distinguished from other techniques to remove and “treat” skin cancers in its precision. So, it is absolutely essential to partner with a skilled and experienced provider. Dr. Tang has the extensive training and experience to perform this surgery as it should be, with utmost precision, and to increase the odds of your skin being truly “cancer-free.”

What makes Mohs different?

The “magic” of the Mohs process comes down to the exacting surgical process. First, a small section of the cancerous tissue is removed. That tiny amount of tissue or sample is then analyzed under a microscope. If we do not detect cancer at the edges of the tissue, then no more tissue is removed. The area is closed with a precision surgical closure technique when and you are free to go home. However, if cancer cells are still present when viewed under the microscope, the process is repeated that same day. These steps are taken until no more cancer cells are detected at the edges of the sample, and then Dr. Tang will determine the best closure and healing options. One of the many benefits of this technique is that it eliminates the “guesswork” of estimating how far or deep the “roots” of the cancer go into the skin because we review and analyze the tissue in real-time at the time of the surgery.

Is MMS right for me, though?

Mohs is characterized as the single most effective technique for removing BCCs and SCCs. Due to its highly precise and tissue-preserving nature, Mohs is also an appropriate option for individuals with large cancers or those in “cosmetically important” or “functionally important” areas, such as the face, neck, groin, hands, fingers, and the bends of the arms and legs. Additionally, it may be recommended for particularly challenging cancers, such as recurrent, aggressive, or fast-growing tumors or those with poorly defined borders.
