When injected into the skin, Sculptra triggers the body’s natural collagen production process, gradually increasing volume and elasticity and resulting in a more youthful appearance. Unlike other fillers that provide immediate results, Sculptra works gradually over several months and provides longer-lasting improvements than other injectables, specifically those formulated with hyaluronic acid. 

The treatment areas for Sculptra include the cheeks, temples, nasolabial folds (smile lines), marionette lines (lines around the mouth), chin wrinkles, and skin creases in the neck, crepey skin in the chest or arms or above the knees. Sculptra injections are performed by our clinicians at Apex Dermatology as an outpatient procedure. The treated area will first be cleansed, and a topical anesthetic cream might be administered to add comfort. We will draw a treatment plan on the skin with a white pencil, and then targeted injectable lidocaine will be placed in certain areas. Then, small amounts of Sculptra are injected into the desired face areas using an extremely fine needle and a cannula. The cannula allows for a safer and more comfortable treatment with significantly reduced risk of bruising. The procedure typically takes under 30 minutes, and the entire visit is likely 60 minutes, and patients might notice mild bruising, swelling, or sometimes redness afterward. 

Your face will be massaged after the treatment, and we will instruct you on how to do the simple “5/5/5” massage at home. You will see the volume we placed for 1-2 days post-procedure. You will then return to your baseline, but no worries, your body will gradually respond to the Sculptra over the next 8-12 weeks. The first Sculptra placements are usually done in a series over the first few months. Then they might be topped off with a single visit every year after that depending on your facial structure, prior sun damage, ongoing skin upkeep and personal goals.
