Why do I have a double chin?
At Apex Dermatology in Westlake Village, California, we treat patients of all sizes and shapes with a double chin. While weight gain can play a role, the double chin or “submental fullness” is multi-factorial. Often, there is a genetic component. Aging also plays a role. For this reason, even with your best efforts to stick to a healthy diet and exercise, this area may continue to look puffier and out of proportion with other parts of your face, neck, and body. This understandably makes you feel less than your best because fullness in the area gives the impression that you are bigger, less healthy, and older than your chronological years.
Why does KYBELLA® work?
KYBELLA® is specially formulated with deoxycholic acid. This is the synthetic version of a naturally occurring molecule that breaks down and absorbs fat. It is introduced via an injectable treatment that is applied to the fatty tissues underneath the chin. This stimulates a process whereby the fat cells are eventually destroyed. Tissues outside of the area remain untouched. These treated cells can no longer store or accumulate more fat. So, it is considered a permanent solution to a double chin.
What does it feel like?
You shouldn’t feel much at all because we “prep” the skin with a numbing local anesthetic prior to making small injections precisely into the fatty areas. This process helps to ensure the even distribution of the fat-fighting molecule. This is considered to be a “minimal-downtime” procedure and an appropriate alternative to liposuction and surgery – without the risks, anesthesia, and recovery associated with these cutting treatments. The most common side effects are limited to the injection sites and include things like temporary swelling, tenderness, temporary numbness, possibly a bit of bruising and occasionally redness.
How many treatments will I need?
This depends at least partly on your “starting point” and how your body responds to treatment. Some patients will require additional treatment sessions to get desirable results. But, again, these results are generally permanent after the fat is eliminated at the target site in the month or so following treatment.
