FAQs about our most comprehensive resurfacing treatment with the Fraxel® DUAL laser

Lasers are a powerful tool at Apex Dermatology in Westlake Village, California. They both resurface the skin and stimulate the production of fresh collagen. We have invested in an array of laser systems. So, there is sure to be an option well-suited to your skin type, needs, and goals.

What laser might be best for me?

Our most comprehensive skin resurfacing solution, the Fraxel® DUAL, is like two lasers in a single system: One, it zeros in to target and treat surface damage. And two, it works deep within the skin to stimulate collagen production, the protein that supports the skin’s firmness.

How does Fraxel® DUAL work?

Unlike other lasers, the energy from the Fraxel® laser light triggers the collagen remodeling/renewal process to rejuvenate the skin cells underneath the surface. This helps to smooth creases and depressions, improving the appearance of wrinkles, scars, and other irregularities. Fraxel® only treats the targeted areas. So, precise and optimal treatment outcomes and safety are supported. It’s also a great option for those who are worried about their results from cosmetic treatments looking “overdone” or “unnatural” and who do not have the luxury of being away from work or their busy schedule for prolonged periods.

What does the Fraxel® treat?

Many different things! It is as adept at softening lines, wrinkles, and surgical and acne scars as it is at combating stretch marks, brown spots, melasma, and other pigment problems. It is also appropriate to address sun damage, such as Actinic Keratosis (a pre-cancer). Because this dual laser works at and below the surface, your skin looks and feels smoother, is free of blemishes, and bounces back due to increased elasticity — it’s you, only the best, healthiest, most refreshed version of yourself.

Is it just for the face?

Absolutely not! Fraxel® may be safely and predictably applied to just about any body part. In fact, pricing is based on the size of the treatment area. Typically, treatments might include the face, neck, chest, hands, eyelids, arms and shins. If you have severe sun damage, scars, or moderate to severe wrinkling, a series of treatment sessions may be on the horizon.

What does treatment feel like?

It’s not unusual to feel a prickly or tingly sensation and some warming during treatment. But no treatment at our office should ever be painful. Plus, each session fits into your life seamlessly, as it can be completed in just 30-45 minutes after the numbing period. If you’ve had Fraxel® in the past, you’ll also be pleasantly surprised by advancements in the technologies used to power this system. The Fraxel® DUAL is far more energy-efficient and requires far less heat needed to get the same effects. Such efficiency helps to support a better, more comfortable, and safer treatment experience. We also employ a powerful Zimmer cooling device to increase comfort and only the best skincare and cooling down after the treatment to get you healing right away. Ask about adding PRP to your treatment or other healing agents to get even more collagen production and speed healing.

What can I expect afterward?

You may need several days of downtime. To start, the treated skin will look red and feel hot going home. You will be a bit swollen. The next day things feel and look a bit better but often still pink and a bit swollen depending on the settings and goals. Starting at around day three, the skin may begin to have tiny spots or roughness sloughing off. This is a good and normal process because it means the damaged and old skin cells are being shed to expose the healthy, unblemished layer underneath. By day five, you should have little to no peeling. Depending on the depth of treatment, the skin of the face may feel rough and different for the first week. If body areas beyond the face are treated they may feel rough for 2 weeks and will need extra hydration throughout that time. In the months afterward, lines and wrinkles will appear softened due to the presence of more collagen within the skin. A series of treatments to achieve your goals is often recommended and then most patients really enjoy an annual Fraxel Dual as part of their long-term skin health maintenance program with their Apex clinician.
