What exactly is Fraxel Dual, and how does it work?

Does Fraxel Dual hurt?
Good news—it’s not as scary as it sounds! While the treatment can feel warm and tingly, most patients describe the sensation as tolerable, like mild sunburn. Plus, our providers apply a numbing cream before the procedure to keep you comfortable. Cold air also blows continuously where the laser is treating to cool and comfort the skin. If you need even more support, ProNox is an easy, safe, breathable option to take the edge off. This option wears off 5 minutes after treatment, and it is safe to drive 10 minutes later, so even if you choose ProNox for boosted comfort control, you are able to return to normal patterns after treatment.
How long does the treatment take?
The numbing usually takes about 30 minutes, and the treatment takes 30-60 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.
Will I need downtime after the treatment?
You will likely experience some redness, swelling, and possibly mild peeling for a few days post-treatment. The appearance afterward is typically pink or red, at least on the first day. If the superficial laser for fine lines, pore reduction, precancer reduction, and texture improvement is used (1927nm wavelength), then you may have little “coffee grounds” falling off the face for 2-4 days. If the deeper laser for more significant collagen building and deep wrinkle management is used (1550nm wavelength), the face will be pink, swollen, and feel like sandpaper for 2-5 days. Many of our patients report feeling comfortable returning to their normal activities in a few days, and some use cosmetics to ensure even skin tone and texture for work or school. We will advise on the best healing agents to use to boost healing. One can also add exosomes or PRP to be placed directly on the skin to boost healing, collagen building, and even brightening.
How soon will I see results?
Patience pays off when it comes to Fraxel Dual treatment. While some improvements, like a smoother texture, can be seen in just a few weeks, the real magic happens over the next few months as collagen rebuilds and the skin gently lifts. Your skin gradually looks fresher, firmer, and more radiant with time.
Is Fraxel Dual considered safe for all skin types?
Fraxel Dual is best used for people with Fitzpatrick 1-4 skin color backgrounds. For people with Fitzpatrick 5-6 skin, we offer other excellent lasers or energy-based devices to achieve your goals. Fraxel Dual can be tailored to suit various skin types and tones. However, it is best to consult a qualified provider who can determine the right settings for your unique skin and goals.
How many treatments will I need?
It depends on your skin goals, but most of the patients at Apex Dermatology see great results with 2-4 treatment sessions spaced about a month apart, depending on your needs and goals.
