Brown Spots Q & A

What are the brown spots on my skin?

Brown spots or patches on your skin, also known as hyperpigmentation, can appear when you produce extra melanin. There are several types of hyperpigmentation, including age spots, freckles, and melasma.

Although brown spots aren’t harmful, you may feel as though they detract from your appearance.

What are age spots?

Age spots, also called liver spots, are brown blotches that usually appear on the face and hands. As the name implies, they’re more common with age and often develop in elderly patients. Age spots are caused by sun exposure.

What are freckles?

Freckles are usually small brown or reddish spots that occur on the face, but they can also appear nearly anywhere on the body. Freckles are caused by sun exposure, but genetics can play a role as well.

What is melasma?

Melasma is sometimes referred to as “the mask of pregnancy” because it’s so common in pregnant women. Melasma looks like a mask covering the forehead, nose, and cheeks.

Usually, melasma is caused by hormone surges. It can appear due to sun exposure or when your hormones levels are high, such as during ovulation, or from heat or inflammation.

How are brown spots treated?

There are a variety of options for brown spot treatment:

Excel-V®

The Excel-V light laser treatment can remove freckles and age spots. This flexible laser can remove nearly any type of pigment or vascular lesion. The Excel-V laser has a continuous cooling system for comfortable treatment.

Fraxel®

Fraxel is a highly advanced laser resurfacing system. There are actually two lasers: one works on your skin’s surface and the other in its sublayers for dramatic resurfacing. It’s a great choice for serious improvement of hyperpigmentation like melasma or brown spots. Fraxel requires 3-5  days of downtime.

Clear + Brilliant®

Clear + Brilliant offers significant results for age spots, freckles, and other skin concerns without any downtime.

Rejuvapen™

Rejuvapen is a type of microneedling treatment that uses ultra-thin needles to generate micro injuries. These tiny injuries stimulate your body’s healing process. Microneedling is usually used for fine lines, but also helps with freckles and age spots.
