Laser Skin Resurfacing Q & A

What problems does laser skin resurfacing treat?

Laser skin resurfacing treats:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sagging skin
  • Age spots, freckles, melasma, or other brown spots
  • Rough skin texture
  • Acne scars or surgical scars
  • Large pores
  • Actinic keratosis, a precancerous skin growth

If you’re frustrated with aging skin or excessive sun damage, or you want to delay aging, laser skin resurfacing is an excellent solution. You can also have laser skin resurfacing on your neck, chest, arms, or hands.

How does laser skin resurfacing treatment work?

The Apex Dermatology team applies an anesthetic cream about 1.5 hours before treatment. The most comprehensive skin resurfacing solution we offer is the Fraxel Dual Laser because it offers two lasers at once: one that targets surface damage and another that works below your skin to trigger collagen remodeling.

You may feel a prickling sensation and some warmth during treatment, but it's not painful. The treatment can take less than 30 minutes.

What can I expect after laser skin resurfacing?

Most patients need at least several days of downtime. For the first few days, your skin will look red. At around the third day, your skin starts to peel. This is a good thing, as it means you're shedding the damaged skin cells to expose a healthy layer of skin underneath.

By day five, most of the peeling is complete. Depending on the depth of your Fraxel treatment, your skin may feel rough for up to one week. Over the upcoming months, you'll also see an improvement in lines and wrinkles due to new collagen growth below your skin.

Are there any alternatives to Fraxel laser skin resurfacing?

Yes. Apex Dermatology offers Juliet Aesthetic for Fractional Erbium resurfacing and several great options for patients who want less intensive resurfacing. Photofacials, which use Excel V to remove surface skin problems like broken blood vessels and brown spots, are tailored to your skin type and doesn’t require downtime.

If you want to brighten your skin and get a more refreshed, youthful look, without any downtime, Laser Genesis is the treatment for you. Called a “Lunchtime Laser” service, Laser Genesis can improve skin tone, reduce the redness from rosacea or broken blood vessels, calm acne and get rid of sun spots all in less than an hour, with no redness or post-treatment skin peeling.

Clear + Brilliant® is a laser treatment that delivers great results for brown spots, rough texture, or other surface issues without any downtime.
