Having a double chin isn’t a look anyone wants. But the truth is that our genes and the results of aging bring you an unwanted double chin. Many individuals aren’t happy with the appearance of their chin and/or neck. Luckily, Kybella® treatments can melt away the fat to give you a tighter, more chiseled appearance.
At Apex Dermatology located in Westlake Village, California, we use Kybella to help bring confidence back to individuals who are unhappy with their profile or selfie. If you’ve thought about getting the procedure and would like to learn more, here’s an inside look at what Kybella is really like.
Kybella is an FDA-approved procedure that injects a safe and synthetic form of deoxycholic acid beneath your chin. The procedure permanently diminishes the fat cells in the treated area using no incision and requires little downtime.
Most patients need about three treatments of Kybella approximately six weeks apart to get the results they want. The best part about Kybella is that it’s permanent and doesn’t require touch-ups or upkeep.
If you’re like most patients, you’re probably nervous at the thought of getting your double-chin injected with a needle. However, you might find comfort in knowing that a majority of patients who’ve undergone Kybella don’t describe it as painful, but rather slightly uncomfortable.
Karin Harp, MD, FAAD, and her team of personally trained PAs have performed hundreds of Kybella treatments and are known for their gentle hands, artistic eye and top-level expertise. Most patients take 600mg ibuprofen an hour before treatment or 1000mg Tylenol if they have no reason they can’t take one of those over-the-counter medicines. Plus, your unwanted area is numbed with topical lidocaine before the procedure so you can relax while Dr. Harp, Kristin Rupert PA-C or Sherri Anderson PA-C dissolve your stubborn chin/neck fat.
Depending on the amount of fat you have under your chin, you may need two to three vials of Kybella each visit. The procedure is generally completed in 15-20 minutes after a series of multiple injections is completed. You will be in the office for 30 to 45 minutes each visit. The overlying skin will gradually tighten as the treatments progress, which is a natural benefit of Kybella treatment.
Towards the end or a course of Kybella, we can even further tailor the treatment area with 1-2 vial portions directed at any remaining unwanted fat or laxity. Half-vials can even be directed at jowl reduction in off-label use of Kybella with very nice results.
Kybella has little downtime and most people can resume their everyday life following the procedure. Dr. Harp advises you not to exercise for 24 hours following the injections.
Mild swelling after Kybella is a common and expected side effect. People often notice this around one to seven days after the treatment. Here are a couple of tips you can follow to make sure you stay as comfortable as possible when swelling occurs:
Ice your neck with an ice pack in a tea-towel or protective layer off and on between three to five minutes to reduce swelling and discomfort. Do not consume excessively salty foods because this can prolong the swelling. If bruising occurs, use Arnica gel and cover-up to reduce the appearance.
Feeling self-conscious about your chin or jowls can take a toll on your self-esteem. It may even prevent you from going to social events or posing in photos with your friends. You deserve to have fun and feel good about yourself, so it’s okay to practice self-care to get you there.
Kybella can help you regain your confidence and help you to be camera-ready over a series of treatments. Learn more about the many benefits of Kybella by calling us at 818-889-2739 or request an appointment online.
